Who Is Free Press?

Free Press is a national, nonpartisan organization working to reform the media. Through education, organizing and advocacy, we promote diverse and independent media ownership, strong public media, and universal access to communications.

What Issues Does Free Press Work On?

Free Press focuses on issues of media ownership; the future of the Internet, noncommercial media; quality journalism; and building a diverse movement for better media.

Is Free Press a liberal or conservative organization?

Free Press is a nonpartisan organization. The media issues at the core of our work unite people from across the political spectrum. Republicans and Democrats, liberals and conservatives are all equally concerned about the importance of universal Internet access, the need to support quality journalism, and the negative impact of media consolidation on our communities and our democracy.

Who Works at Free Press?

Today, Free Press is the largest media reform organization in the United States with a full-time staff of more than 30 based in our offices in Washington, D.C., and Florence, Mass.

Who started Free Press?

Free Press was launched in late 2002 by media scholar Robert W. McChesney, journalist John Nichols, and Josh Silver, who is the executive director of the organization.

How is Free Press Funded?

Free Press accepts no money from corporations, political parties or the government.

Free Press is funded by foundations, public charities and individual donors.

The Free Press Action Fund, our advocacy arm, is funded almost entirely by individual donors. Please consider becoming a member.

Is there a minimum gift?

Yes, there is a minimum gift of $5 for online donations to the Free Press Action Fund.

How will my gift be used?

Gifts to the Free Press Action Fund enable us to counteract the Big Media lobby that inundates the offices of elected officials on a daily basis. We'll put your gift to work right away promoting better journalism, fighting media consolidation, restoring slashed public broadcasting budgets, protecting the integrity of the Internet, and working for affordable, accessible broadband for everyone in the U.S.

Why make a donation that isn't tax-deductible?

The Free Press Action Fund relies on contributions from individuals to lobby on behalf of the public. By law, donations to organizations that lobby are not tax deductible. Your support is crucial: For every 100 industry lobbyists, there is only one public interest media lobbyist.

Is my gift tax-deductible?

Because we lobby, gifts to the Free Press Action Fund, a 501(c)(4) organization, are not tax-deductible. Gifts to Free Press, our 501(c)(3) organization, are tax deductible to the extent allowed by law. All gifts made online support the Free Press Action Fund.
